PLECIA NEARCTICA-
I've lived in Florida my whole life and "lovebugs" have always been a part of summertime. There's a myth that has been floating around for decades that states Plecia nearctica was a failed UF experiment, synthesized in a lab to eat mosquitoes. Despite this being completely untrue, the myth still circulates possibly because many people are under the false impression that they have no place in the food web. Despite the insects being so common, I had never taken a close look at them so i wanted to create this magnified pair to teach myself a little about their physiology and to erect a monument to something that has become a part of Florida mythology. Made with epoxy putty, polymer clay, wire, lacquer. Brian Philllips.
